On Wednesday, February 20, 2008, Paul F. Knitter was inaugurated as Union Theological Seminary's Paul Tillich Professor of Theology, World Religions and Culture. During the ceremony, Professor Knitter, a leading theologian of religious pluralism, presented his inaugural address, "Doing Theology Interreligiously: Union and the Legacy of Paul Tillich."

This podcast features an address by the Rev. Dr. John A. McGuckin on the occasion of his installation as the first professor to occupy The Ane Marie and Bent Emil Nielsen Chair in Late Antique and Byzantine Christian History. Professor McGuckin, who has taught Early Church History at Union since 1997, also holds standing as Professor of Byzantine Christian Studies in the Religion Department of Columbia University.

Jeffrey D. Sachs delivered the keynote address on Thursday, October 11, 2007, for Union Theological Seminary's Bonhoeffer Lectures "Ending Poverty: World Poverty and Moral Responsibility."

Dr. Sachs is the director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. From 2002 to 2006, he was director of the UN Millennium Project and special advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, the internationally agreed goals to reduce extreme poverty, disease, and hunger by the year 2015. He is currently special advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

The Bonhoeffer Lectures program is part of the German-American lecture and academic exchange established at Union in 1993. The lectures alternate between the United States and Germany and focus on public and ethical issues that Dietrich Bonhoeffer addressed or would have addressed.

Hello, and welcome to another episode in the podcast of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. It's been a long time since we last posted an episode, and we've received many inquiries into the possibility that our podcast needed to be eulogized. But fear not, faithful podcast listeners, we're back this week (and again next week) with a two-part series featuring Dr. Cornel West, who returned to Union recently to deliver the fourth Barry Ulanov Memorial Lecture.

This episode, the first in a two-part series, will feature the introductions of Dr. West and Dr. West's lecture, titled "The Socratic, the Prophetic, and the Democratic." In next week's episode we'll bring you the fascinating question-and-answer period that followed this lecture.

Dr. West served on Union's faculty from 1977 to 1984 and again in 1987-88, when he was Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice. He is currently Class of 1943 University Professor of Religion at Princeton University.

One of America's most gifted and provocative public intellectuals, Dr. West's writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the American traditions of the Black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz.

This lecture series honors the memory of Barry Ulanov, a professor of English at Barnard College for more than three decades and a prolific author. After retiring from Barnard in 1988, Dr. Ulanov taught at Union Theological Seminary in the program of Psychiatry and Religion.

Preceding Dr. West's lecture, we'll be hearing introductions to this event and our esteemed speaker from Union President Joseph Hough, Professor Ann Belford Ulanov, and Academic Dean Euan Cameron.

Our first speaker, Rev. Amy Gopp is currently Associate Director of Week of Compassion Ministries, the relief, refugee and development ministry fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a fund which reaches out to suffering people around the world. Rev. Gopp received her Master of Divinity degree from Union in May 2005. While a student at Union she co-founded Union's Poverty Initiative, a program devoted to training future religious leaders to overcome poverty and economic injustice in America more information on this program can be found on it's website www.povertyinitiative.org

Today we present her sermon entitled "Where is the Victory," Rev. Gopp delivered this sermon at Union's James Chapel on Monday, the 27th of Feb, 2006.

Our second speaker is William Burnett, faith community organizer of Picture the Homeless, an organization founded by Lewis Haggins, Jr., and Anthony Williams, both homelss men. Picture The Homeless is an organization dedicated to empowering the homeless to unite in a collective voice. Dr. Taussig has taught graduate New Testament Studies and pastored progressive United Methodist churches for the past two decades, as well as at Union for the past seven years. He is now entering his second three year appointment here at Union and we're blessed and honored by his presence.

Additionally his books include "The Progressive Church at the Grassroots in America", "Jesus Before God: The Prayer Life of the Historical Jesus;" and the upcoming "What It Is and Where to Find It". This is in addition to many other works which he has penned in collaboration with other reknowned scholars and theologians.

Dr. Taussig is co-editor of "Constellation: Thinking Progressively About Christianity," an online journal associated with the Center for Progressive Christianity. He is also a founding member of the Jesus Seminar and currently a member of the steering committee of the Acts Seminar of the Westar Institute.

Most Sundays you can find Dr. Taussig in his role as co-pastor of the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church in Philadelphia.
